The problem of increasing health care costs for companies has recently become more prominent and more difficult to deal with. Over the past twenty years many corporations have encountered close to fifty percent raises in company health-insurance premiums. This is due to poor work environments, increasing stress, and decreasing health of employees. A great way for a corporation to change these things and therefore decrease health insurance costs and improve the quality of work done by employees is to create an employee health and wellness program.
Wellness programs help the mental and physical health of employees while also creating a less stressful and sometimes more fun work environment. In general, wellness programs develop a higher sense of well being in the employees of the company.
Companies have many options on how to create a successful employee health and wellness program. One option is to have an onsite fitness center that employees are able to use before and after work. By building a fitness center where a company’s employees work every day, the company is showing that they are concerned with their employees’ health, while also promoting weight loss and giving a good strategy for individuals to stay healthy. Another benefit of having an onsite fitness center is that it makes the workplace a more fun and enjoyable environment which therefore decreases the stress of the workers while actually increasing their productivity. In order to have a successful fitness center, a corporation must have good fitness center management and must employ individuals who have been properly trained and certified in order to keep the employees of their company safe and exercising properly.
Other than building a fitness center, there are many other options that a corporation has to create a successful employee health and wellness program. The corporation can hold classes that teach either general health education, different ways to cook healthily, or ways to eat and exercise healthily, or they can hold specific exercise classes such as spinning, running, or yoga.
Companies can also give employees the opportunity to participate in meditation/relaxation programs, or massage therapy to decrease the stress involved with working. Other ways to decrease stress in employees is to have support groups in certain areas such as cancer, weight loss, diabetes, or alcohol abuse. With a combination of all these programs and ideas mentioned, the overall health of the company’s employees goes up and the company’s health-insurance premiums, goes down.
